- Workers of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad went on strike over a second pay cut
- Hayes used federal troops to restore order after workers were killed by military

ORIGINS OF THE LABOR MOVEMENT
- Creation of a large, propertyless class of workers
- Do not own means of production (tools), unlike the mechanics of an earlier period.
- Must sell their labor to live
- Powerless in relation to employers
- Live in cities or large towns
- Includes Socialist and Anarchist workers' parties
- Grew during rapid industrialization during the Civil War
- First NATIONAL Unions: National Labor Union, National Colored Labor Union (didn't survive panic of 1873)
