Citizens Advice Newcastle recently collaborated with Shelter on a campaign to gather evidence and highlight the issue of individuals being excluded from local authority housing registers in the Tyne and Wear area. Through the cases reviewed, Citizens Advice Newcastle identified concerning patterns of exclusion.

One significant issue is that people are being excluded due to previous rent arrears, some of which date back to seventeen years ago. Additionally, while individuals are provided with reasons for their exclusion, obtaining the specific details of the alleged events or behaviours causing the exclusion is often very difficult. This lack of transparency makes it challenging for individuals to contest the exclusion decisions. Citizens Advice Newcastle is concerned that these issues might represent just a small portion of a broader pattern of poor practices. Citizens Advice Newcastle hopes that their involvement will help prevent future exclusions of clients.
