10 dic 2004 año - Bank Accounts Campaign

Descripción:

Citizens Advice Newcastle highlights the critical role of bank accounts in addressing financial exclusion, noting that about one in twelve UK households lack such access. Bank accounts are essential for job readiness and obtaining better deals for services. However, Citizens Advice Newcastle's evidence shows a mismatch between government policies and current banking practices, resulting in difficulties for vulnerable individuals, including discharged prisoners, non-UK citizens, people on benefits, and the homeless, in accessing bank accounts.

Citizens Advice Newcastle clients face particular challenges due to issues with identity and address verification required by banks. Despite government guidance, banks often fail to adhere to it, exacerbating the problem. Citizens Advice Newcastle contributed to a national report by Citizens Advice, which led to a Treasury Select Committee recommendation for banks to improve their practices. These recommendations include displaying information about basic bank accounts in branches, providing reasons for account rejections, setting up accounts within ten working days, and avoiding debt set-off from basic accounts.

Citizens Advice Newcastle continues to monitor and collect evidence on this issue and plans further research to address these challenges.
