This year, Citizens Advice Newcastle (CAN) has taken a more active, problem-solving role, rather than simply referring clients to the appropriate authorities. Not only are the workers required to assist more clients, but they must also operate with a much greater depth of knowledge and understanding. The handling of tribunal cases is a good example of this shift. In the early stages of the T.A.S., identifying and referring the problem was all that was required. However, the increasing pressure on tribunal scheme staff has necessitated greater expertise in interviewing, detailed knowledge, and case preparation.
