23 mar 1996 año - Fee-Charging Credit Companies

Descripción:

In March 1996, Citizens Advice Newcastle successfully exposed a company that falsely promised to write off up to 80% of people's debts over £5,000 for a fee starting at £295, from debtors who could in some cases not afford a realistic standard of living.

After working with various credit companies, the Office of Fair Trading, Local Trading Standards, the DTI, and the Lord Chancellor's department gathered sufficient evidence, leading to the company being shut down by the Department of Trade and Industry in April 1997.

Although such fee-charging companies continue to exist, the Debt Unit and local Citizens Advice Newcastle offices are now better equipped to mitigate the financial harm they cause to vulnerable individuals.
