Earlier this year, a client on a low income who couldn't claim benefits due to his immigration status sought advice on his significant council tax arrears. Citizens Advice Newcastle raised the issue at the Welfare Rights Liaison Group Meeting, where Newcastle Council’s Revenues Section acknowledged the lack of a relevant policy.

In response, a report was created collaboratively with 'Money Matters' and the Ethnic Minorities Team. This report detailed the types of claimants affected and provided recommendations for handling such cases in the future, aiming to positively influence future policy and case management.
