In September 1996, Citizens Advice Newcastle was approached by Northumbria Probation Service to see if they could provide a paid member of staff to work at their various offices in Newcastle. This staff member would assist people released from prison, advising on housing issues, securing benefits to aid rehabilitation, and generally supporting efforts to reintegrate into society.

The Probation Service proposed a six-month pilot scheme, to be reviewed in March. An existing member of staff was seconded to the project, and due to her enthusiasm and expertise, the scheme quickly became a success.

In January, a meeting was held to discuss the achievements of the first three months of the project. Based on the statistics provided and the Probation Officer’s recommendations, it was agreed to continue revenue funding for an additional financial year.
