Universal Credit was rolled out in Newcastle for some people. With this came the issues of digital exclusion as claims have to be made online, as well as difficulties caused by delayed payments.
In November 2015 research carried out by 16 local Citizens Advice offices and published by Citizens Advice, found that 1 in 10 claimants were waiting 63 days or more before getting a payment of Universal Credit. This caused enormous hardship for clients. The main reason clients come to Citizens Advice Newcastle for food vouchers at this time was consistently because of benefit changes and delays, especially for those changing benefits after being found fit for work whilst receiving sickness benefits or clients who have been sanctioned.
