The scheme provides help and advice for clients faced with a possible appearance before a tribunal, and in certain cases, to provide actual representation for them.

It was launched as an experiment in October 1975 for 6 months. It became an instant success, and further funding for 12 months was secured.

The scheme has notably involved extensive work in employment, which is time-consuming but highlights a critical need. Legal aid isn't available for tribunal representation, making the T.A.S. invaluable for unrepresented individuals facing formal and daunting tribunal experiences.

While representation is crucial, a key success of the Tribunal Assistance Scheme is the number of cases settled without requiring a tribunal, thanks to the effective intervention by the workers on behalf of clients.

In its first year, T.A.S. helped 619 people: 220 due to national insurance issues and 279 due to employment reasons.
