Odin travels to Mímisbrunnr - Mimir’s well in Jotunheim, seeking the knowledge he needs to lead his people. He plucks out his own eye, threw himself on his spear, then hanged himself in Yggdrasil, the tree of life, for nine days and nine nights in order to gain knowledge of other worlds. During his sacrificial actions, he saw visions and received secret wisdom, including that the Aesir would only rise if Ymir was thwarted, that Odin would only succeed if there was peace between the Vanier and Aesir, and that Odin would need the cooperation of the Dwarves of Nidavellir.
