The bombing of Nagasaki occurred on August 9, 1945, when the United States dropped the “Fat Man” plutonium bomb on the city1. This was the second atomic bombing in Japan, three days after Hiroshima. The bomb exploded about 1,650 feet above the city, instantly killing an estimated 40,000 to 75,000 people. The geography of Nagasaki prevented destruction on the same scale as Hiroshima, yet nearly half the city was obliterated. This devastating event, along with the bombing of Hiroshima, led to Japan’s unconditional surrender in World War II.
