785 AD - today: The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a historical and architectural landmark in Andalusia, Spain. Originally built in 785 by Abd al-Rahman I as the Great Mosque of Córdoba on the site of a Visigothic church (previously a Roman temple dedicated to Janus), it was expanded several times by his successors. After Córdoba was conquered by Castile in 1236 during the Reconquista, the mosque was converted into a cathedral, and a Renaissance nave and transept were added in the 16th century. The former minaret was turned into a bell tower. Despite these changes, many Islamic elements have been preserved and restored. Today it serves as the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, where daily Mass is celebrated, and is a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its influence on Islamic and "Moorish" architecture in the western Mediterranean.Añadido al timeline:
