31 oct 1922 año - Mussolini’s becomes Italian leader
Descripción:
Causes:
1. Even though Italy was neutral in the first world war their economy was in bad shape and inflation was high. Extremist on the left side of the political spectrum, communists and socialists destabilised the country by organising workers strikes.
2. In response more nationalistic forces on the right hand political spectrum organised themselves under the umbrella of fascism. Their goal was to create a state controlled society with a strong undemocratic leader, Mussolini.
Effects:
1. Mussolini founded the Italian fascist party which drew a lot of support from war veterans who had been aching to get involved in world war one. His infamous paramilitary combat squad ‘the black shirts’ terrorised everyone who didn’t agree with them and their ways.
2. In the year 1922 he lead the fascist march on Rome taking power of the entire country.
3. Mussolini declared himself Duce (dictator) and got rid of any political opponents by force.
4. Once in power Mussolini tried to restore the national pride by trying to expand Italy’s influence in Africa. He invaded Ethiopia in order to try colonising the country. At the time Ethiopia was one of the last remaining independent countries in Africa.
5. Mussolini became allies with other European nationalist such as Hitler in Germany and Franco in Spain. The three shared an undemocratic ideology based on fear and radical force.
6. Ultimately Italy’s armies were underprepared and disorganised leading to embarrassing defeats across the battle field in Africa and in Europe.
