1959: The UN General Assembly adopts the Declaration of the Rights of the Child,
which granted handicapped children special treatment, education, and care based off
their condition. This was recognition that children with disabilities need to receive
appropriate support based off of specific needs, and asserted their right to existence as
human beings with the right to grow up with their parents.
