RADICAL REPUBLICANS
- Goals for reconstruction were to democratize the South, establish public education, and ensure the rights of freed Black people
- Believed the Civil War was meant to stop slavery and emancipate all slaves, that Congress (not the president) should control Reconstruction.
- Rejected the reentry of TN, AK, and LA into the Union, despite their qualification under the 10% Plan
- Wanted the rebellious South to be dealt with in a harsher manner
- Insistent on voting and civil rights for freedmen in the South
