When Britain tested it's first atomic bombs, the United States and USSR had started production on the more powerful hydrogen bomb.

With America's assistance, Britain developed it's own hydrogen bomb.

Shortly after, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) was formed. This group rejected nuclear weapons and supported a unilateral nuclear disarmament policy.

Around 8000 people took part in the demonstratrion in Aldermaston in 1958.
