In 338, a son of the
assassinated former leader named Tuoba Shiyijian 什翼犍 (r. 338–376) returned
from nine or ten years as a royal hostage in the capital of the Later Zhao dynasty
(ruled by members of the Jie people) on the Central Plain, proclaimed himself King
of Dai, and established the principle of hereditary, non-fraternal, succession, from
father to son. Based upon his exposure to Chinese institutions, he also established
some Chinese-style official titles and a simple law code.
