The Knights of Labor was founded in 1869 as a secret society of tailors in Philadelphia before becoming a public labor organization in 1879 under the leadership of Terence V. Powderly. The organization sought to unite all workers, regardless of skill level, gender, or race, to advocate for reforms such as the eight-hour workday, safer working conditions, and the abolition of child labor.
