The Amnesty Act of 1872 was passed by Congress to remove the last of the civil disabilities imposed on former Confederate officials and military personnel by the Fourteenth Amendment following the Civil War. This act restored political rights to over 150,000 former Confederate supporters, except for about 500 top leaders, facilitating their reintegration into American political life.
