The Freedmen's Bureau, formally known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, was established in 1865 to assist freed slaves and poor whites in the Southern states and the District of Columbia during the Reconstruction era. The agency provided food, housing, medical aid, established schools, and offered legal assistance while also attempting to settle former slaves on land confiscated or abandoned during the war.
