Georgia, the last of the original 13 colonies, was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as a social experiment to provide a new start for England's poor and to serve as a buffer state against Spanish Florida. With a diverse economy based on agriculture, notably rice and indigo, and a population marked by social diversity and a ban on slavery (which was lifted in 1750), Georgia played a unique role in the social and economic development of the Southern colonies.
