- series of three protest marches held in 1965 along the 54-mile highway from Selma, Alabama to the state capital of Montgomery
- organized by civil rights groups to protest the blocking of black Americans' right to vote
- first march known as "Bloody Sunday" (violent police attacks on peaceful marchers)
- second march led by Martin Luther King Jr., but turned around after agreement with federal authorities
- third march lasted 5 days, about 25.000 people at the Alabama State Capitol on March 25
