Due to a minor conflict in the Gulf of Tonkin, and a steady pressure buildup in regards to Commies in Vietnam, starting the long, grueling war that never was winnable. As the nation watched in horror, this war degenerated into a waste of resources and men, and seeded some of the earliest student protests in the country. Essentially, this sendoff began the war that created student activist culture as we know it today, due to the drafting of young men and the horrors on the television screen.
