In 1600 the East India Company obtained permission from the Mughal Empire to build fortified posts on the coastlines. In the 17th century, company merchants traded mostly for Indian pepper and cotton, Chinese silk and porcelain, and fine spices from south east Asia. During the 18th century, tea and coffee became the most prominent trade items, and European consumers acquired a taste for both beverages that they had never lost.
