Pennsylvania State Police force was formed in 1905 as a result of the anthracite mine strike of 1902. The force was created to replace the abusive and unaccountable Coal and Iron Police, a private company police force primarily used to counter union organizing. Although the force's role in breaking strikes drew opposition from organized labor, it has been an integral part of law enforcement in Pennsylvania for over a century.
