16 abr 2023 año - 115/ Maître de l'Enéide: painted enamel plaques of 1530

Descripción:

In this post a unique series of beautiful painted enamel copper plaques are discussed. They are attributed to an unidentified artist with given name MAÎTRE de l’ENÉIDE, active in Limoges around 1530, and were modelled after fine woodcuts of Johann GRUENINGER (1455–1533), illustrating the ‘Aeneid’ of the Latin poet Virgil (70 – 19 BC), edited in 1502 in Strasbourg. Fig.1 compares the first woodcut of the title page and the corresponding enamel plate (1). The composition shows Virgilius at his desk, his muse Musa in front and to the right with large figures, the famous story of Paris, Venus, Juno and Pallas. While this story is not told in the Aeneid – nor in the Iliad of Homer – it is supposed to be well known to all readers, including those of 1502, as the cause of the Trojan War (2).
