30 oct 2023 año - 120/ EXPLORE (2): the popularity of two canon Italian Renaissance Nudes

The controversial concept of Umberto Eco for moving museums presenting only one original artwork, surrounded by all types of other works enlightening the creation, the meanings and all matters ‘quality’ of the original one, was successfully realised in the exhibition ‘Venus unveiled – The Venus of Urbino of Titian’ at the Europalia Arts Festival Italia 2003 (1). The 20th anniversary of this exceptional event is inspiration to apply a second time in this Blog the online tool EXPLORE, part of the unique Visual Contagions project at the Faculty of Letters, University of Geneva, featuring a large Corpus of Open Access Periodicals, mainly 1890-1950, Europe, N. America (2).

Fig. 1 demonstrates when, where and how many times the images of this canon and of ‘The sleeping Venus’, attributed to both GIORGIONE and TIZIANO (3), are published in the illustrated journals of this Corpus. This way we add quantitative knowledge to Umberto Eco’s museum.
