10 mar 2024 año - 124/ The illustrated damaged Venus: an anniversary

Descripción:

The Damaged Venus is a section in Lynda Nead’s monograph 'The Female Nude - Art, Obscenity and Sexuality' (1, p.31) where the author discusses the slashing of the wonderful masterpiece painting Rokeby Venus, also known as Venus at her mirror, by Diego VELAZQUEZ (1599-1660) in the National Gallery in London, on 10 March 1914, 110 years ago (2). Of course, this was hot news and twelve English newspapers between 11 and 20 March 1914 reported extensively about the incident, some of them on their front page, with photographs of the painting and the suffragette Slasher Mary Richardson. But it took one week before an original artwork inspired by the event was published. Fig. 1 shows in sequential order illustrations of the event, published in England, Italy and Germany. No more could be found (3). A detailed photograph of the damage itself was made available by the National Gallery (Fig.2).
