17 agos 1862 año - Little Crow's War

Descripción:

Little Crow, the chief of a band of the Dakota Sioux, signed a treaty in 1851 agreeing to move to two reservations. They gave up 24 million acres of land in return for money (some up front which the government didn't pay and some in annuities which they delayed paying). Reservations couldn't produce enough food so they were forced to pay high prices for food brought by agencies which was often inedible.

In 1858, the Dakota Sioux were forced to sign away half of the reservation in return for money to pay off their debts. People were having to resort to eating grass - desperate situation.

In 1862, the tribe took food and provisions from the Agency's warehouses and distributed it among their starving people before burning down the Agency's buildings and attacking settlers towns and army forts, slaughtering settlers. Dakota warriors were put on trial and most sentenced to death after troops were brought in. President Lincoln insisted only those proven guilty of rape or murder should be killed.
