The definition of citizenship is based of Aristotle’s quote that “a citizen is someone who rules and is ruled.” Ancient Greek citizens were defined as active participants in the decision-making of the state, while also abiding by those same rulings. To be eligible for citizenship, they had to be male, a property-owner, and of respectable genealogy. This is also when the separation between the public (war, commerce, etc) and private (marriage, judicial system, etc) spheres of social life.
