Ernest Rutherford was a British chemist and maybe the best experimentalist since Michael Faraday. He was experimenting by shooting atoms at a sheet of gold, and with J.J. model he expected the positive charge to be spread too thin to reflect the atom and that it would go straight through the sheet, while it was true for most of the atoms some of the atoms bounced back, so he concluded that the atom must have a nucleus and the electrons must be orbiting around in empty space around the nucleus.
