Henry VIII wanted a divorce from his wife, but the Pope would not grant it. Therefore, Henry began to reform the Church in England, making himself head, and splitting with the Roman Catholic Church.

The English Reformation was part of the general European Reformation towards Martin Luther's ideas of Protestantism.

Poverty had increased during his reign due to bad harvests. Henry abolished sanctuary and destroyed monasteries, which made poverty worse, because they provided food and charity to communities.
