The Peasants' revolt was triggered mainly by high taxes. King Richard II ended the widespread rebellion by mobilising 4000 soldiers to restore peace, and tracking down the rebel leaders.

Legends such as the Robin Hood originated from the 14th - 15th century because of:
- over-mighty subjects breaking the law
- the Forest Laws
- belief that kings should be strong and noble
