John Peter Zenger (NY publisher), was imprisoned for publishing his opinion on New York's governor. In trial, the judge asked if his actions were done with full consciounce. The attorney argued that free people should have free opinion, this persuaded the jury to anounce him not guilty. His trial was what promoted the idea of freedom of speech.
