A problem with negotiations with the USSR came with the Soviet leaders continuing to die from old age- Reagan exclaimed that they keep "dying on me". However in 1985, a much younger Mikhail Gorbachev became ruler. In 1984, Thatcher met with him and was impressed saying that she liked him and that they can do "business together". This led Thatcher promoting negotiations between Regan and Gorbachev. Compromises were made and, although no agreement was created, an end to the Cold War towards 1986 was slightly clearer.
