Texas became an important location because of there effort to train and equip soldiers. Texas was recruiting a lot of people for this war. On August 23, 1917, the arrest of an African American started a riot where 19 people died. Marcelino Serna, a Mexican immigrant captured 29 soldier enemies and was honared with many medals.
