- in response to the formation of NATO and Western Germany joining it : it thus served as a counterbalance and aimed to protect the interests of the socialist bloc.

- unified military structure: all members had to have armies that could fight under Soviet leadership if necessary --------------------------------------------------------------------- Members: Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and East Germany (+ Albania also but ended up withdrawing)
