Descripción:
Due to the Ruhr, Germany had to print money in order to pay off the workers in the strike, along with the fact it now had no goods to trade since no worker was working. Germany later realized that printing money was useful, and actually used it to pay off its debt including 200 million USD in war pensions.
However, this quickly got out of hand. With so much money in circulation and not enough goods to buy with, people soon realized this money was worthless. The middle and lower class suffered from this, as their savings now couldn't even buy a loaf of bread. People had briefcases to hold all their money in because there simply was so much of it.
It was clear to both Germany and other countries that this situation needed urgent action, so in August 1923, a new government under Gustav Stresemann took place. Stresemann was a huge help, he:
- called off the passive resistance in the Ruhr
- Created a new currency called the Rentenmark
- Negotiated with the US and created the Dawes Plan
- Negotiated the reparations payment
Stresemann was a new beginning for Germany, he acted quickly and effectively.
