16 oct 1962 año - Aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis
Descripción:
Background info:
- On the 14th of October 1962, Kennedy discovered nuclear missile sites being built in Cuba after the USSR had stated that it wasn't going to do so
What did Kennedy do?
20th Oct: Kennedy decided on a blockade of Cuba
22nd Oct: Kennedy announced the blockade and called the Soviets to remove their missiles
23rd Oct: Kennedy receives a letter from Khrushchev (secretary for the communist party of the soviet union), saying that soviet ships would not observe the blockade, and did not admit to the nuclear missiles being in Cuba
24th Oct: The blockade began. By 10 am that day, 20 soviet ships which were close to the zone of the blockade stopped or turned around
25th Oct: Even though the ships turned around, missile bases in Cuba were still being proceeding
26th Oct: Kennedy receives a long personal letter from Khrushchev saying that the missiles in Cuba were purely defensive, this was the first time he admitted that there were in fact missiles in Cuba, and the only way for them to remove the missiles was if the US lifted the blockade.
27th Oct: a second letter was sent where the terms of the letter sent the day before were changed, and instead saying that the missiles in Cuba would only be withdrawn if the missiles in Turkey that belonged to the US, be withdrawn as well. Later that day, Kennedy decided to ignore the 2nd letter that was sent and instead followed the terms of the first letter, along with stating that if the Soviets did not withdraw, an attack would follow.
28th Oct: The Soviets removed their missiles and sent them back to the soviet union.
