The Battle of Camden was one of many crushing defeats endured by the Americans. British forces set up a supply depot and garrison at Camden as part of their attempt to maintain power of the South Carolina backcountry. The American army marched into South Carolina, aiming to free the state from British rule. Both armies had reached each other to the North of Camden. Both armies fought for a long while. When the British army had gotten close enough to show their beyonetts, the Americans had turned and run.
