The Continental System was set up by Napoleon. It was a large-scale blockade to cut off Britain's trade with European nations. Napoleon wanted to incapacitate Britain as a European powerhouse by cutting off all their commerce, therefore destroying its economy. Napoleon's desire for power and to make France the sole European powerhouse led him to implement this Continental System.
