Napoleon used the wartime state of France to have himself declared Emperor of France. He declared himself Emperor to hold more power and hopefully create a future dynasty in France. He was able to abolish the Consulate, where he was First Consul and the other two consuls were mostly figureheads. He used the wartime state of France that the created through his push for expansion to get himself declared Emperor. He used his power as Emperor to implement or try to implement things such as the Continental System in Europe.
