A part of Napoleon's quest for French expansion, the Battle of Trafalgar was a naval battle between the British navy and the forces of the French and Spanish navies. The French/Spanish fleet was trying to move into the Mediterranean Sea to help the French forces attacking Italy. The British fleet caught them off of Cape Trafalgar and the French/Spanish fleet was destroyed. This foiled Napoleon's plan to invade Great Britain, which the British had feared and so had targeted the navy in this battle. However, France's involvement in wars and conflicts allowed for Napoleon to proclaim himself Emperor of France.
