An English philosopher, best known for his influential work in political philosophy in the in the 17th Century. Some of his ideas on human nature have had implications for understanding human behavior in psychology. He supported the idea of egoism, that individuals are fundamentally motivated by self-interest which reflects a pessimistic outlook on human behavior driven by a desire for self preservation (Gert, 1967).
