The Janissaries used to be an effective military of the Ottoman Empire, but over the years, they grew less disciplined and more corrupt. Eventually, they became obsolete with the Industrial Revolution and the new weaponry and military tactics that came with it. Because they were unwilling to cooperate with the sultan and strongly opposed reforms, they were eventually abolished.
