A significant breakthrough for iRobot, which was established in 1990 by a team of MIT academics, came from work the inventor made on a robot to search for land mines while conducting research for the U.S. military. The team developed an algorithm that allowed the robot to investigate every square inch of a designated area. Interestingly, the same idea functions as a robotic vacuum's control mechanism; rooms must be thoroughly swept. With 15 million sold to date, the Roomba was the first practical robot to truly become popular with the general public, demonstrating that people will accept a robot into their homes if it is sufficiently useful, even if it isn't a full "android."
