In 1949, British neurophysiologist and inventor William Grey Walter, who was born in America, used the same components that are still fundamental to robotics today: sensor technology, a responsive feedback loop, and logical reasoning, to build two battery-powered, tortoise-shaped robots that could navigate around objects in a room, find their way to a light source, and return to a charging station.
