-After failing to find a job as an advisor and official to rulers, he attracted a circle of students that he taught his ideas (that would later be written in "Analects")
-Thought the earlier Zhou period was a Golden Age with wise rulers
-Emphasis on "rituals"- forms of behavior that promote harmony in human relationships
-"Filial Piety"- obedience, reverence, and love from children to parents
-"Ren" (humanness)- feelings between family members was expanded into a universal ideal of benevolence and compassion that would influence every activity
-Promoted respect for ansectors and gods but though that supernatural matters were unknowable
