In late July 1974, Nixon finally complied with the courts and released the tapes. It was revealed that there was an 18 1/2 minute gap in one tape. Nixon's secretary, Rose Mary Woods, Nixon's Secretary Rose Mary Woods said that while she was reviewing one of the tapes, she had to answer a phone call and accidentally pressed the wrong button, incidentally erasing part of the tape. Another tape from June 23, 1972, showed that Nixon had knowledge of the cover-up all along. The recording, dubbed the "Smoking Gun Tape", completely eliminated all support of Nixon and Nixon prepared to either resign or face certain impeachment.
