CC.org is credited with re-thinking of the role of the "commons" in the "information age". Their frameworks help individuals and groups distribute content more freely while still protecting themselves and their intellectual property rights legally.

Twenty years after its founding, Creative Commons estimates that over 2.5 billion CC-licensed open works have been made available online.
